Even the uninitiated frat boys wandering down
Congress can see that something's up at Irene's. Opening as a Peruvian
restaurant-cum-Latin dance club, Irene's has built a mixed following
of Latino youth and dance aficionados that makes for an unpredictable
but lively crowd. Irene's gets points for adding another dimension
to Tucson's garage-happy downtown scene. Bet you money that even
those too cool to dance are secretly envious when they pass Irene's
and see a hot tango couple in action.

CLUB DENIZENS 411:
Want to dance with a partner? Start here. The crowd
is mixed on every level, with a shared passion for dance. Or the
flirtation that comes with it. Cover on weekends.
DRINKS AND MUSIC
Known for the traditional Mojito (mint leaves and
lime juice with white rum) and a full bar.
HELPFUL
Ballroom types be advised: When asking someone to
dance here, be cautious as they are probably on a date. If you're
serious about dancing, leather soles are best. Skip the sneakers
and bring your manners.
UNIQUE FEATURES
The sidewalk barbeque is the only real sign of
food between the Hotel Congress and Grill. The dŽcor may seem surreal, and if it does, it's because...
PAST LIVES
Irene's used to be the CafŽ Magritte, appropriately decorated in High Surrealism. The fist-shaped stove in the main dining room is the primary artifact.
